3 Perfect Ways to Spend a Day in Aurland and Flåm

Whether you're seeking adventure, peace, or family experiences, Aurland and Flåm offer unforgettable moments right in the heart of the Norwegian fjords. Here are three perfect itineraries, all with Aurland Fjordhytter as your ideal base.

1. For the fjord and Viking history lovers: Cruise on Aurlandsfjord and the UNESCO-listed Nærøyfjord

Start your day with breakfast at Flåm Bakery, just a 10-minute drive from Aurland Fjordhytter. Enjoy fresh pastries and great coffee by the waterfront. It is the perfect start before your fjord cruise from Flåm to Gudvangen.

There are several cruise options between Flåm and Gudvangen, including quiet, fully electric boats with panoramic windows and onboard guiding about the fjord landscape. The cruise takes about two hours and lets you experience the Aurlandsfjord and the UNESCO-listed Nærøyfjord, two of the most beautiful fjords in Norway.

Once you are in Gudvangen, visit the Viking village Njardarheimr, just a short walk from the pier. Learn how the Vikings lived, try archery, or see traditional craftsmanship in action. It is a hit for both kids and adults.

Before heading back to Flåm, grab lunch by the fjord. Choose between fresh seafood, pizza, or dine in true Viking style at the Viking Diner.

Return to Flåm via shuttle bus (make sure it's included in your cruise ticket). The ride takes about 20 minutes.

Still have energy left? Spend some time exploring Flåm centre, with shops, souvenirs, and a variety of restaurants. Then head back to Aurland Fjordhytter for a peaceful end to an eventful day.

2. For the view seekers: Stegastein Viewpoint and Hike to Prest

Start your day at Marianne Bakery and Café, only 5 minutes by car from Aurland Fjordhytter. Enjoy fresh, local pastries and bring some along as trail snacks.

Then drive up to the Stegastein viewpoint, located 650 meters above the Aurlandsfjord. Just a 15–20 minutes drive from Aurland center, it offers one of the most iconic views in Norway, perfect for your Norway bucket list.

From there, drive a few more minutes to the Prest trailhead for a hike. The mountain summit reaches 1478 meters above sea level and offers a stunning panorama of the fjord. The hike is steep and moderately challenging, taking about 1.5 hours each way. Once you have reached the top, sit down and enjoy your trail snacks. If you are lucky, you might be greeted by the local goats.

After the hike, cool down with a refreshing fjord swim and enjoy a well-deserved dinner at Hotel Aurlandsfjord.

3. For the active explorer: Flåm Railway, Rallarvegen and Flåm Zipline

Looking for an active vacation in Norway? Aurland and Flåm are perfect for adrenaline lovers and mountain seekers.

Start with breakfast by the fjord at Aurland Fjordhytter. If the weather is good, enjoy it on the dock as the sun rises over the water.

Head to Flåm station and board the world-famous Flåm Railway, one of the steepest and most beautiful train rides in the world. The journey to Myrdal takes about an hour and includes audio-guided commentary.

From Myrdal, you can return to Flåm by foot, bike, or train. Want more? Continue to Haugastøl via the Bergen Railway, where Rallarvegen, Norway's most scenic bike route, begins. For a shorter ride, start from Finse. Biking from Finse to Flåm can be done in one day, and bike rentals are available.

Along the way, don't miss the Flåm Zipline, the longest in Scandinavia: 1381 meters of pure thrill with spectacular views!
